The Hulk was not too bad at all.

My good friend Keith loaned me The Hulk DVD a few weeks ago. It took me forever, but I finally got around to playing it. I grew up on Marvel comics, man. It’s a good time to be a moviegoer! All of my favorite superheroes from when I was a little nerd (as opposed to the grown-up geek I am today) have been recreated in a spectacular fashion on the big screen, now that CG special-effects can really do my imagination justice. (Not to change subject in mid-stream but wow, I also grew up on LOTR.) It’s awesome. I was a big fan of X-Men most of all and X and X2 did not let me down. Spiderman was excellently done. Then–I saw Daredevil. The huge balloon that represented my fascination and pleasure at seeing my fantasies come to life was immediately deflated. Wow, that movie sucked!

I think that the fear that The Hulk was going to be another Daredevil is what caused me to keep the case on my desk unopened for those weeks (nor did I attempt to see it in the theater). Anyway, let’s not dwell on the negative. The Hulk was actually pretty good. Eric Bana was very credible I thought. I recall when the movie first came out, reviewers cried that there was only 7 minutes of Hulk “face time” during the entire movie, or something like that. To be honest, I didn’t even notice. The pace was good. The ending with Superbad-Dad was a little cheesy, but I liked the rest of it. Good job Marvel. Can’t wait for Spiderman 2 and X3 and whatever else they come up with!

I give The Hulk a 7 out of 10.

The Image Map Returns, new for 2004!

Anybody who has been designing webpages for a while should remember the old image map. It’s a very old concept that has essentially died out. You see it every once in a while on a circa 1995 webpage. :)

Well, it’s back. A List Apart has a story in their latest issue that revives the image map concept using CSS, and explains where you would need such a construct. Read the story, and see the end result. View the HTML source, it’s as clean as a whistle! (Whatever that means.)

Startup Monitor

Now this is very cool software. Startup Monitor will watch the various ways that software can cause it to start at every reboot in Windows, and intercept and optionally allow you to deny the software from doing so. A great example is Real Player. They like to install a “helper” that’s hardly better than spyware. In fact, I guess this program will catch some types of spyware as well. Even better.

WMI Downloads

WMI stands for Windows Management Instrumentation. It’s provides a consistent way to manage Windows boxes across the OS versions. WMI is Microsoft’s implementation of Web Based Enterprise Management (WBEM).

Web Based Enterprise Management is an Industry initiative to provide management of systems, networks, users and applications across multiple vendor environments. WBEM simplifies system management, providing better access to both software and hardware data that is readable by WBEM compliant applications.

The Windows Management Instrumentation Downloads page contains among other things, a Tools and Tutorial section that looks useful. I’ve only barely scratched the surface on this stuff, but my goal is to be able to manipulate WMI objects using WSH scripts.

new section: Programming

I’ve just added a new sectionto my site: Programming. I’m not a full-fledged developer by any stretch of the imagination right now, but I’m learning. I hope to use this section to show the process by which I learn, and to share useful books, tools and sites I visit along the way.

My focuses right now on programming are the following:

  • Windows Scripting Host, which includes the jscript and vbscript programming (or scripting) languages. I’m a Windows sysadmin by trade, so its long past time for me to bone up on scripting my platform of choice.
  • PHP is what I prefer for coding web appliations.

Two new CSS Tutorials

The Max Design guys do it again. New to their CSS tutorial series is Selectutorial. If you have not read the others, each one is excellent, and focused. Selectutorial is a piece about CSS selectors–the part that comes before the braces. In the below example, the bold portion, including the leading period, is the selector.

.nav p { font-family: Arial; }

The second site to highlight today is a set of three CSS tutorials at htmldog.com. The dog answers to PTG, he’s a freelance webdesigner in the London area with a great sense of humor. In the past he’s written a set of HTML Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. New to his site is a another brief series of three, these concentrating on teaching CSS.

Enjoy.
