How to Automate iTunes and iPod Synchronization Using PowerShell

Music Powershell

I realized lately that one thing I do every day before I leave the office is to ensure that my iPod has been sync’d recently.  It’s a major bummer to get into the car only to realize that the latest “The Guild” or “Totally Rad Show” is sitting on my computer and completely inaccessible during the long drive home.

I decided to create a scheduled task which will sync my iPod around 3:50 PM, so it’ll be ready to go when I am.  These instructions were made on a Windows XP box, the same thing applies on Vista but the steps to do it will be slightly different.  Here’s how you do it:

  1. Go to your Control Panel, Scheduled Tasks, then click on Add Scheduled Task.
    image
  2. Click Next, then Browse.
    image
  3. imageType this into the Open File dialog box and hit enter:
    %windir%\system32\windowspowershell\v1.0\powershell.exe
  4. Name the task “Sync iPod” or something like that, choose an interval (such as daily) and hit Next.

  5. Choose a time of day for the task to execute, and hit Next.
  6. Supply your credentials so that the task can run even when you are not logged in but your PC is on.
  7. Check the box labelled “Open Advaned Properties” and then Finish.
  8. imageClick in the Run field and hit the End key.  You should see “powershell.exe” then your cursor.  Hit the space bar, then paste in the following text, all on one line:

    -noprofile -command &{ write-host ‘Synchronizing iPod’; (New-Object -ComObject iTunes.application).UpdateIPod(); write-host ‘Sync complete!’; start-sleep 5 }

  9. Finally, click Ok.

Now, assuming your iPod was already plugged in and iTunes is running, your iPod is not syncing at the moment.  If it is, wait till its finished so that you can test the task.  If you didn’t forsee the above, go ahead and do that; we’ll all wait for you.

And we’re back.  Now simply go the Scheduled Tasks control panel applet again, right-click on the new task and choose Run.  Within a few moments you should see that iTunes has started synchronizing.  If it does not work for you, please leave a comment and hopefully we can figure it out.

Nine Inch Nails - Ghost I-IV

Music

ghosts_160x600_1NIN did a Radiohead the other day, releasing their album (well, the first 9 tracks) for free.  When you go to the site and register, you receive an email with a download link.  The link is to a zip file, and the archive contains 9 MP3s encoded at 320kbps bitrate (which is very high).  In addition–and this is very cool–there is an extras folder which contains 11 large images suitable for desktop wallpaper.  They are provided in normal 4;3 ratio and widescreen format.  There’s also 22 images in various other sizes useful for putting on your website, like you see to the right.

If you click on the image, you’ll see the various options for ordering the album which include:

  • $0 for 9 tracks in MP3 format
  • $5 for the full 36 tracks in MP3 as well as FLAC & ALE formats
  • $10 for 2-CD box set
  • $75 deluxe edition which includes everything in multi-track format which you know the NIN fans love to remix, plus a Blu-ray disc
  • And there was a $300 limited edition signed by Trent Reznor but all 2600 of them are already sold out.  Amazing.

I really don’t think you can consider this an experiment anymore.

I’m listening to the tracks now.  So far it’s instrumental.  I’m not sure if there are any lyrics at all.  Could be just the first volume (the 9 tracks) is all instrumental.  I’ll probably grab the $5 version later.

So long Winamp, and thanks for all the fish!

Music Windows

So, Winamp just decided to stop working for me lately. Long stalls at startup, random crashes and more. I still care a lot for you Winamp, and we’ve known each other a long long time, but I think we need to start seeing other people.

I’ve actually been using Foobar2000
foobar2000 main window (cropped)

for a while now. But it’s been sort of a special-purpose tool rather than a media player. I found some useful live show tagging utilities in it, as well as an AAC encoding method which I liked.

Well, I decided to give FB2K some more time. It is very configurable, and I like that. OTOH, it’s probably one of the most confusing applications I’ve ever used; mostly due to that flexibility. It has support for plugins, which they call “components”. They have a strange way of manipulating the appearance. The screenshot here shows something that took me probably a couple of hours to figure out. But sometimes that is ok. After all, I am a software junkie. This certainly gives me my fix!

Winamp is all about the flash. Foobar2000 is more of a minimalist approach. And it’s made for power users. What does that remind you of? That’s right, it’s very similar to the goals of the Psi project of which I am a part. So, with that in mind, I think I’m going to keep messing around with FB2k and see what all it can do.

Pandora - Find New Music, Listen to Custom Internet Radio Stations
Can you help me discover more music that I’ll like?

Those questions often evolved into great conversations. Each friend told us their favorite artists and songs, explored the music we suggested, gave us feedback, and we in turn made new suggestions. Everybody started joking that we were now their personal DJs.

Never buy a Sony / BMG “audio CD” again

Music

I’m just now catching up on some stories from Slashdot and digg about this and oh my God this is insane.

The best and most detailed writeup you will find is on Sysinternals. I’ll paste their summarization, then you go read up.

Man, I’m glad I stopped buying CDs a long time ago. But my wife still does occasionally. Now we’ll have to filter out anything with Sony on it. Jeez!

For those readers that are coming up to speed with the story, here’s a summary of important developments so far:

The DRM software Sony has been shipping on many CDs since April is cloaked with rootkit technology:

* Sony denies that the rootkit poses a security or reliability threat despite the obvious risks of both
* Sony claims that users don’t care about rootkits because they don’t know what a rootkit is
* The installation provides no way to safely uninstall the software
* Without obtaining consent from the user Sony’s player informs Sony every time it plays a “protected” CD

Sony has told the press that they’ve made a decloaking patch and uninstaller available to customers, however this still leaves the following problems:

* There is no way for customers to find the patch from Sony BMG’s main web page
* The patch decloaks in an unsafe manner that can crash Windows, despite my warning to the First 4 Internet developers
* Access to the uninstaller is gated by two forms and an ActiveX control
* The uninstaller is locked to a single computer, preventing deployment in a corporation

Consumers and antivirus companies are responding:

* F-Secure independently identified the rootkit and provides information on its site
* Computer Associates has labeled the Sony software “spyware”
* A lawfirm has filed a class action lawsuit on behalf of California consumers against Sony
* ALCEI-EFI, an Italian digital-rights advocacy group, has formally asked the Italian government to investigate Sony for possible Italian law violations

Now playing…

Music

Need new music? Wander over to [archive.org][]’s [Live Music Archive][lma]. Tons of bands make recordings of their live shows available for free. Let me rephrase. A lot of bands, most of the “[jambands][]” genre, do not mind if people record their shows and freely exchange bootlegs (aka [trade-friendly][]). Why? Because most of their money is made from the ticket sales from live shows, not from CD sales!

Anyway, who cares about the economics? I suggest the easiest place to start for the live music newbie is Archive.org’s [listing of bands][list_mp3] with MP3/OGG recordings available for download. There are about oh…450 bands by my estimate listed with shows for download. And the cool part about the MP3/OGG subset is that you can stream the tracks off of their server. Sort of a try-before-you-buy without the actual paying of money part.

Once you move beyond the newbie level, you may also want to check out the [even larger list][list_shn] of every artist on archive.org. This list includes shows in formats other than MP3, most of them the [lossless][] formats [SHN][] or [FLAC][].

Some bands you may recognize: [311][], [Angie Aparo][], [Cowboy Junkies][], [Grateful Dead][], [Jack Johnson][], [Rusted Root][], [Toad the Wet Sprocket][].

And I also recommend: [Bela Fleck and the Flecktones][], [Fugazi][] Ooh, I just re-found them, and [Umphrey’s McGee][].

And for the curious, I’m now listening to Robert Randolph [and the Family Band]: 2004-06-13. I never heard of him until a couple of days ago. Sounds good to me.
