Been using this for work email for over a week and I still really like it. Has a couple minor bugs, is missing a few features that I had in Touchdown. But overall, it is really very good. It is much better than the stock Android Exchange client, that is clear. It does folder management better than TD, and its GUI is a little more pleasing to my eyes. Does not do notes sync, and the task sync seems totally broken for me right now. But email is solid, or I never would have considered using a beta so long. Highly recommended, especially if you never shelled out $ for Touchdown and are only using a stock Froyo/Gingerbread or HTC Exchange client on your Android device.

Android Atlas

This is a new show from CNET. In fact, it’s so new, I haven’t listened to yet, so I can’t really comment on the quality. However, they generally run a great studio, and Jason Howell is a known quantity from his tenure on Buzz Out Loud, so I will definitely check it out. Available in audio and video formats.

Android Central

This show is up to 15 episodes, and they have done a great job with recent Froyo and Evo coverage. The show has 2-4 regular hosts. Recommended. Available in audio format.

I love the content. I can’t stand the audio quality as delivered over BlogTalkRadio (and I’m looking at you too, TalkShoe!). As a podcaster myself, I’m pretty picky about that, so I skip over it unless it’s the last unplayed podcast on my iPod. Guys—please produce a real audio podcast for us!
I just love the intro music. This show is great because it’s devoted to app reviews—an idea which which I myself had and haven’t yet capitalized on.
This is one of the shows from Jason Calicanis’ new ThisWeekIn studio. It’s professionally produced, and so far, I like it. To be honest, I started listening to this at the same time as a few other Android shows and they have all sort of blended together, so until I get my head straight, I can’t give a solid review. Available in audio and video formats.

Just a quick response to this article from the Windows Mobile Team Blog about why they took Wifi sync capability out of Windows Mobile 5 & ActiveSync 4:

Here is the way I see it:

Microsoft announced their so-called security initiative a year or three ago, and right afterwards, disabled wifi sync. You might recall, this was where they had press releases talking about how they were changing the way they were coding, tools, performance goals, etc all to revolve around security (because they were getting ripped about the lack thereof).

I have no evidence to prove this, but I think what happened was that some supervisor looked into what it would take to really secure wifi sync and after having a good look at the code decided it would be a huge job to redo some endemic design flaws. Supervisor said to his boss something like “it’ll take 3,000 man-hours to do it right”. The reply was something like, “uhh, let’s just disable it. I’ll have Marketing spin some reasons and tie it into our new security initiative”. I’m sure that the decision was intended to be revisited later, but as their enterprise customers (who have a large influence on future roadmap decisions) all were using Exchange so wifi sync wasn’t on their radar. Add to the fact that “everyone knows” that WEP can be broken as easily as an egg and that WPA/WPA2 wasn’t popular yet (not to mention not included in Windows Mobile!) and that basically explains it.

I really thought they would fix this with WMDC but here we are with Beta 2 and I don’t see wifi sync.

For the record, I just did a new Vista beta 2 build, plugged in my Sprint PPC-6700 via USB and…nada. Way to go Microsoft! WMDC is a chip off the old Activesync block!

Hmm. Not sure if I should be impressed or what.

Let me tell you the backstory. I use Pocket IE for browsing because, well, because it’s about the only thing out there. It does an OK job of rendering large pages on the small screen, but its tabless and otherwise featureless.

First thing I did on Opera 5 was to go to Google. Duh. On PIE, presumably because of the user agent string it sends, Google switches me straight over to their mobile page, which is google.com/xhtml. Weird URL, but anyway. On Opera instead I got the big page. So I type this URL in manually and splat.

Now to try Minimo again…maybe its gotten better since December.

Through a confluence of events I am lucky to have lots of toys lately. The first event is a tragedy with a happy ending. As some of my readers may know, I’m into PDAs and up until recently was really excited about getting an HP iPAQ hw6515 PDA/phone to replace my aging h4155 PDA.

Well the other day my wife was using my PDA for something and she laid it on the stairs to my sons’ bunk bed. Little precarious wooden step about five feet from the floor. You know where this is going… I knocked into it and down it went. It’s survived falls like this before, but what happened is that it hit one of the lower steps and another wooden stool nearby. Solid wood is harder than carpet, and the LCD cracked.

Bad news, that’s $160 to replace. Good news, I just sold it on eBay for $77 as-is. Better news, we decided I would get my Xmas present a bit early. After much much much deliberation, I decided not to go for the HP due to a few serious drawbacks it has. I started shopping around for other devices and settled on the Sprint PPC-6700.

Cool stuff. Windows Mobile 5, funky slide-out keyboard, decent amount of RAM. And of course the big thing my last PDA didn’t have–a phone. So far I find it a little harder to use as a phone than your basic mobile phone, but not that big of a deal. Main drawback is that without a hardware phone keypad I can’t dial numbers by touch anymore. Might look into voice dialing software to help with that. PDA-wise it is around the same speed as my previous one (~400mhz), but with a newer OS and other cool softwary stuff.

Incidentally, the best site I have found so far for the Sprint is pdaPhoneHome.com. They have really great forums.

I am in a bit of a quandry. Waaaay back in March of this year I learned about the upcoming HP hw6500 series Windows Mobile PDA / GSM phone combo. With the builtin GPS its a really killer combo. But for some reasons unknown, HP has not released the unit back in March, or April, back when I was originally expecting it. They finally did release it in Europe and elsewhere, but it’s still not available in the US six months later.

Now the critics are panning the unit since it doesn’t have Windows Mobile 2005 but instead the older 2003 SE version. HP has since confirmed (*whew* I can finally admit that I knew this weeks ago but couldn’t say anything) that there will be no upgrade path for this unit. :s

So. I’ve heard it will be out soon (really), but I don’t know if I still want it! The GPS is the only compelling reason to get it IMHO. Everything else that you can do with it, you can do with the upcoming Palm Treo 700w. Plus as we all know, Palm has made several very successful converged PDA/phone units now. Frankly, their track record is better. (Can you say HP 6300?)

So where does this leave me? The new Treo is supposed to be out “early 2006″. The hw6500 will be out in the US “soon”. (before xmas, ok?)

I think now it comes down to price. We don’t know what Cingular will be charging yet with a service discount. My current mobile contract ends 12/6, so I’ll be ready.

So now I guess I have to post in their (guess I can say “our” now) forums.

For the longest time I had used Avantgo for offline web browsing on my ipaq. Main reason was because it came with it. Avantgo wasn’t very reliable though. I always seemed to have sync problems, or websites would lose my cookies so I couldn’t login to receive custom content. Plus it’s not /free/, it just pretends to be.

Several months ago I came across Sunrise. Sunrise is a specialized offline web browser. Well it’s more of a crawler than a browser. You give it a URL and tell it how deep to crawl. It can also speak RSS, which Avantgo does not do (last I checked). Then Sunrise will create documents in the Plucker format. Plucker is a document format made popular on the Palm OS PDAs, and I had used that back when I had a Palm (M105 for who’s counting.) The format doesn’t really matter to me, but of course you have to install software on the Pocket PC to be able to read them.

Anyway, it gets a little involved after that, but for me it is worth it because Sunrise is so flexible. You can tell it to crawl 3 levels deep, but restricted to the same host. You can filter webpages through an XSLT to alter the output. You can include or exclude pages using a <abbrev title="regular expression">regexp</abbrev>

Well someone did saved me the work of writing up the whole process, and that prompted me to write this and link to it.

MobileRead Networks – Pocket PC-Vade Mecum Sunrise Mobsync(sync to SD card) – awesome offline web browsing!

Another real interesting piece of news is that the guy that wrote this review posted lots of confidential bits to the iPAQabilities website. Really juicy stuff. But it got pulled from the site. Quite by accident my web crawler (Sunrise) snagged a copy of the article before it was removed. If it weren’t for the fact that I work for HP and would be summarily fired, I’d post it here. :/

The iPaq HW6500/6700 is coming out in April according to HP. I talked to someone at T-Mobile and she said she was pretty sure they would not be getting it in April because she would have known by now. Not sure what that means exactly. Could I get the phone from HP and just pop in my tmob SIM card and it would work? Or will I have to wait?

The phone has great stats, but I’m afraid it’s gonna break the bank. Check out the radios–you have bluetooth, wifi (on the 6700), GSM, GPRS, GPS, and I think you can control the Hubble Telescope with it. CPU is reported to be faster than the H6300. Rumors on the net were that it might not have bluetooth but I have independently confirmed that it does.

More details: 3GSM World Congress 2005 coverage: photo review: iPaq Mobile Messenger h6500

### Update 2005-03-19 ###
I missed a radio, it has EDGE as well. Also, the length and width is almost precisely that of my H4155, but 21mm deep, as opposed to 12.7mm.

Did something cool with my [Sony Ericsson T610][1] the other day. The little joystick was broken on it, had been for months actually, and I finally got tired of working around it and called [T-Mobile][2]. Turns out they replace handsets for free within the first 12 months. Cool!

So, got the new handset pretty quickly, swapped out SIM cards (I love [GSM][3]!) and viola, done. Wait! No, not done. Most of my contacts were not stored on the SIM card because I had chosen to sync the phone with my Outlook contacts. My phone came with some software called XTNDConnect which seemed to work fine, but my laptop doesn’t have Bluetooth so I had to use IR.

Well, IR is boring and backwards. It’s 2004, hey almost 2005, I must use Bluetooth! Plus the web rumor mill says XTNDConnect is as likely to wipe out your contacts in Outlook as it is to sync them to your phone. So, I enabled Bluetooth on my phone and iPaq and messed with the options. Turns out that you can select multiple contacts and send them via Bluetooth in Windows Mobile 2003. They make it a pain though, there is no “select all” option, so I had to click and drag down through 236 contacts.

Then I found another problem. My phone prompts to add every contact. I had to click “yes” two-hundred and thirty-six times. Ugh. I never found a way to disable that prompting.

Then I remembered that I had downloaded some ringtones and themes and such from [myt610.net][4]. It was a simple matter to push those files from my PC to iPaq to phone. There is a slightly better way, I can grab them via WAP, but I’ve pretty much determined WAP is slow and useless, and at $4.99 a month, while cheap, makes no sense for that added expense.
