Windows

Ok, that is an unfair and sensationalistic headline. So sue me. :)

Check this out though!

Introducing The Server Core blog » MSBLOG
Server Core is a minimal server installation option for Windows Server “Longhorn”. It runs a subset of the server roles included in Longhorn Server, specifically it supports the following:

  • DHCP server
  • File Server
  • DNS server
  • Active Directory

And the kicker? NO GUI. That is some wild and crazy stuff for Microsoft. Amen though. Long time coming, I say. I can totally see using this at work.

## Update @ 20060601 00:08 ##
Ok, this thing sucks apparently. Go here to see me whomp on Microsoft’s latest offering. I’m hoping they come back with some better answers. I printed it to a PDF in case I get wiped for trolling. :)

And when you see the price tag you’ll be thinking “Damn, why don’t I just use Linux”.

I actually asked in the originating MSDN blog entry about pricing. If its cheap, and you can load IIS on it (which may not be possible), it would be a credible competitor to Linux in the webhosting area, which is something I’m interested in.

yes IIS 7 :D
It has all the features of Windows Server (such as Active Dir) without the UI and price tag… Pretty sweet if you run it on a low end box.

Actually you CAN’T run IIS7 on this thing. I think it’s pretty worthless. It’s not “without the UI” but just without explorer.exe.

[...] After seeing an article about Lognhorn Server Core on my blog, an editor from China Network World (CN version of the magazine with a similar name by the same publisher in the U.S.) chatted me up to get some further comparisons between Linux and Server Core. So as you can see, I got quoted in the article, which is pretty cool. Thanks Qi Jin Hua! Posted under Software, Windows | [...]
