Jabber

Jay Knight is writing that we might see Jabber in use inside the Gizmo VOIP client. I haven’t found the forum post he is referring to yet though… Has anyone else heard about Gizmo integration?

While I don’t follow Jabber much, I have been a faithful Skype user until now. I’m a gamer, and when playing with two or three friends, Skype has been THE way for voice comm. MUCH better than teamspeak or any other similar service. However, the limitation was 4 people in a conference call. Bummer.

Now that I’ve found Gizmo… I may be switching. Gizmo lets you create a conference room that ANY number of people can call into… SWEET!

A client which can do Jabber and SIP and works as well as Gizmo would seriously challenge clients like Neos.

Neos uses the somewhat dated H.323 protocol instead of SIP, in their Jabber client. It also only supports Windows, and doesn’t even theme to look like the only OS it runs on. Meanwhile, Gizmo already support both Windows and Mac, and release their Linux port some time this month. :-)

Skype users will probably start trembling too. Yes, you can call out and call in with Skype, and those calls cost slightly less than Gizmo’s in most cases, but Skype users can’t call users of any of the enormous number of SIP services for free until it supports SIP. As Gizmo is a better client anyway, it should be stealing an awfully large number of users from Skype.

And once they integrate Jabber support, all those stolen users become Jabber users. :-)

Gizmo 1.1 was just released — and it includes Jabber IM support.
